How to Introduce Cats

One of the most common reasons that cats are returned to us, is because they do not get along well with the current resident cat(s). And most times, it is because they didn't slowly introduce them to each other.

The new cat introduction process is extremely important in determining the success of having a multi-cat household.

Proper introductions are important to help cats adjust to one another and start to build on their relationship. The best way to introduce cats to each other, is what we usually refer to as "slow introductions."

Don’t rush the process: Introductions can take days, weeks or even months. Go at the pace of each cat, and back up a step if you see signs of stress or conflict.

The time required for the introduction process varies greatly depending on the cats involved. It is important to recognize that this will probably take a little bit of time and effort to make everything happen smoothly.

Patience is extremely important in this process, and it is important to know that you may be required to repeat steps in the introduction process multiple times. But if done correctly, your new cat could wind up being good friends with, or at the very least peacefully cohabitating with your current family cat(s).

Most cats get along fine if the introductory process is done correctly. Please seek help from your veterinarian, they can help answer all of your concerns.
